The accessory middle cerebral artery as a collateral blood supply.

چکیده
We describe two cases of acute embolic occlusion of the internal carotid artery and the middle cerebral artery in association with a patent accessory middle cerebral artery. Because of the presence of the accessory middle cerebral artery, the frontal lobe was salvaged to some extent, but it did not provide sufficient collateral blood supply to the middle cerebral artery territory to spare the rest of the frontal lobe, the temporal lobe, and the basal ganglia.

Ruptured aneurysm of the accessory middle cerebral artery associated with moyamoya disease: a case report.
The accessory middle cerebral artery can provide collateral blood supply in moyamoya disease. We report a case of unilateral moyamoya disease which demonstrates the anatomy of the right accessory middle cerebral artery and a ruptured peripheral aneurysm on the artery. Our patient was a 56-year-old woman who initially suffered from headache and lethargy. Right caudate nucleus hemorrhage with int...
متن کاملEarly collateral blood supply and late parenchymal brain damage in patients with middle cerebral artery occlusion.
We angiographically studied 80 patients within 6 hours after the onset of ischemic supratentorial infarction. From this group we selected 36 patients with middle cerebral artery occlusion who survived. In these 36 patients, we compared the presence of a collateral blood supply during the early phase with the extent of final parenchymal brain damage obtained by computed tomography 3 months after...
متن کاملTranscranial Doppler ultrasound in the evaluation of collateral blood flow in patients with internal carotid artery occlusion: correlation with cerebral angiography.
PURPOSE To determine the accuracy of transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound for evaluation of collateral supply through the circle of Willis in patients with internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion. METHODS The evaluation of the collateral pathways through the circle of Willis with TCD ultrasound and with cerebral angiography was compared in 40 patients (30 men, 10 women; mean age, 55 +/- 9 ye...
متن کاملpatient‐specific three‐dimensional model
Background: The aim of this study is to provide better insights into the cerebral perfusion patterns and collateral mechanism of the circle of Willis (CoW) under anatomical and pathological variations. Methods: In the current study, a patient-specific three-dimensional computational model of the CoW was reconstructed based on the computed tomography (CT) images. The Carreau model was applied to...
متن کاملThe variable clinical and CT findings after carotid occlusion: the role of collateral blood supply.
A retrospective review of 61 cases of angiographically confirmed occlusion of one or both carotid arteries was carried out to look at the evidence that the presence of collateral blood supply influenced the extent and type of cerebral infarction. Forty six patients had bilateral angiography from which it was possible to assess collateral filling of the internal carotid and middle cerebral arter...
